This is a different take on interval classes with the added benefit of developing your jump rope skills and in turn your biomotor abilities. Skipping has shown to be one of the most effective workouts for burning fat and toning as well as a tool for improving agility, coordination, speed and endurance.
The great thing is it’s available to adults of all ages, skill and fitness levels. We’ve had people from their late teens to 60’s attend regularly. Whether you’ve lapsed in the gym, never exercised or even touched a jump rope in your life, this is the ideal workout for you. People surprise themselves at what they can achieve within a few sessions.
Benefits and aims of the class:
- Improve fitness and cardiovascular health
- Learn a new skill in jump rope and pick up some fancy tricks along the way
- Improve movement capacity and efficiency with increased range of motion
- Increase bone density and help prevent conditions such as osteoporosis
- Improve biomotor abilities (strength, endurance, speed, flexibility, balance and coordination
- Improved muscle tone and weight loss
- Most importantly – have fun and do something different
The class is interval based, each interval lasting between 90 seconds and 2 minutes 30 seconds. These will alternate between 1 interval with the rope which would usually focus on a specific technique, a short rest period and then an interval of bodyweight exercises with focus on a particular movement pattern or muscle group. Some intervals may focus on group exercises or involve the use of training equipment designed to enhance biomotor abilities. As a result, you get a high intensity workout but a lot more enjoyable, all the while developing a beneficial skill and improved movement.
We begin with a warm up of dynamic stretching and activation exercises, move into the intervals and then cool down with some core stability work and static stretching.
The class usually lasts around 50 minutes.
These classes are suitable for beginners or experienced jumpers alike. We have had people who have never picked a rope up before to professional athletes who are well acqauinted with a jump rope.
All fitness levels welcome. There are always alternatives demonstrated for those or don’t feel comfortable or familiar with a certain exercise or movement. Do what you can at your own pace and have fun with it.
